5 mobile games you should try

If you are like me, phones, iPads, or iPods, are not your primary gaming source. Most games out on mobile are free-to-play with a bunch of annoying microtransactions. Even so, there are still some gems. What I wanted to do is guide you away from the bad games and steer you to the games I personally found enjoyable. Note: I'm playing on a 4th gen iPod touch. No IOS 7, Android, or tablet games will not be listed because I don't have acces to them.

Jack N' Jill

Price:Free

First up is a game I have been addicted to for just over a week. I found out about it when a friend was playing it on his phone. I asked what it was, and he told me that it was Jack N' Jill. He then let me play a few levels, and I was hooked. It has simple gameplay. The only controls are tap to jump. The challenge comes from the timing and the abilities. Usually to beat a level, at least the later ones, you have to play through the level a few times and memorize it. First it is simply jumping, but the abilities and other twists keep it fresh, such as the wings. It changes from a game of precise timing to a game of avoiding obstacles in the air. It is also nice that the only effect of being free is that there is an ad at the top of the screen that isn't very invasive.

2048

Price:Free

Another game I found through a friend, it is also fun and addicting. The purpose is to get a tile to 2048. But how do you do that? You slide the tiles around and combine them. You do that by sliding two tiles of the same value into each other. It starts at two, then goes to four, then eight, then sixteen, and so on. It offers less than Jack N' Jill, but is still fun nonetheless.

Eden

Price: $0.99

I believe I heard of this one from my brother. I saw him playing it and I thought at first glance it was Minecraft, but noticed it looked slightly different. Then I saw key differences, like the ability to set things on fire whenever you want, and a much different interface. I didn't have an iPod at the time though, so I didn't really care about it. But when I got an iPod, I had some iTunes credit and remembered this game. I decided to give it a go. I ended up finding it very enjoyable. There are things I like in it that Minecraft does not have, such as trampoline blocks and blocks that make you slide very fast. Those things don't seem very big, but I found they hugely contributed to my enjoyment of it. Overall, it's a good Minecraft-esque sandbox game.

Plague Inc.

Price:$0.99

You may have heard if this game, I believe it is or at least was very popular. I had been aware if this game for a while, but I didn't buy it until I saw someone else play it and I decided I wanted to try it for myself. The concept sounds a little brutal. The idea is to create a disease that destroys the human race. It isn't violent at all though, you don't actually see anyone die, you just see a map showing the world and where your disease has spread to. The way you play is by evolving your disease to do things like avoid a cure from developing or making it spread faster. You can also choose if you want to be subtle and infect the world without anyone knowing, or you can go all out and try to destroy everyone quickly. You would think hiding is the best strategy, but with multiple disease types that can be harder, due to it costing you to devolve with some types. On average, a game for me takes about 30 minutes. You don't have to play straight through though, you can save. Completing a game on normal with a disease type will unlock you the next one. I personally have only made it to the second one because I'm not very good.

Sticky Bees

Price:$0.99

I actually found out about this game from Gameinformer. There was an article that was in the magazine about the development, initial success, then (sadly) decline of the game. The point of the article was to talk about people developing games on mobile and finding success, but after reading it I went and bought it instantly. What you do is you drag your finger around, controlling the invincible king bee, which is trailed by the vulnerable, normal bees. You have to destroy all of the enemies in all if the waves to win a level. Your health is your pollen, which you start to lose if all of your bees die. You can get a few power ups, such as additional pollen or freezing the enemies that are onscreen. It isn't too difficult or anything, but it's fun.

I hope you liked my list. I tried to include games that weren't very well known, so I wouldn't be telling you to download a bunch of games you already have. Are there any games I missed that you really enjoy? Let me know in the comments.
