A Heartfelt rant from a Nintendo fan

Nintendo…Nintendo….Nintendo. All eyes are focused on them, all attention in the industry is focused on their every move, they’re impossible to ignore. Bad press is all I pretty much see about Nintendo, and it’s getting extremely stressful to even try being a fan of them when most of their actions call into question if they understand the current industry. I appreciate Nintendo doesn’t just copy the competition, I really love the fact they’re the black sheep in comparison to Sony and
Microsoft.

However I think they let this mentality their fans had since the N64 days go to their head’s, and make them believe they can completely ignore the competitors and make any crazy decision they want. Nintendo isn’t only stuck in the past, they’re also stubbornly remaining stagnant. They’re not training many new developers for the future, meaning when the older big shots at Nintendo like Miyamoto retire and or die, there will be no talent left to fill those big shoes. On top of not creating new IPs to draw in old and new fans alike, they rely on their tried and true franchises, but even this strategy they’re fumbling.

Why do they focus on old titles but don’t make new games in several beloved franchises? Where’s a new F-Zero, Metroid, or Star Fox? I know these titles don’t sell as much as Mario or Zelda, but they’re still great incentives to jump on and buy whatever current Nintendo console is out. Nintendo has literally released a handful of games for Wii U in the span of a year and a half which is completely inexcusable. They don’t have any content to fill in the blanks between their big Mario and Zelda games, it’s like they’re purposely avoiding making games for the Wii U.

I know this isn’t how they always handle their systems either, look at 3DS, they continue pumping out quality content while they let the Wii U die a slow painful death with hardly any announced content for the future. Whatever development teams they have working on 3DS content should be shifted to the Wii U to try putting more content on the damn system. People point out all of Wii U’s flaws and reasons why it’s not selling, but want to know what It truly believe? I think it’s a simple matter that Wii U just doesn’t have the games out to support it, and this needs to addressed within this year.

Nintendo needs to come out guns blazing and announce more than just the typical Wii fit *** for the Wii U’s future, they need to make people excited, they need to let us know that there are games coming. That’s literally the only problem that has kicked the Wii U down so hard, the fact it’s not getting support from Nintendo or third party developers (And if they do release games they’re half hearted *** ports that convince people to not buy third party games on Nintendo systems. What a *** cycle). Games, that’s what gamers really want from their game consoles more than anything else.

The PS4 is proof enough of this age old fact, and how Sony is handling it is the complete opposite of Nintendo. Sony hasn’t released too many big triple A titles on the system, because understandably it takes time to develop these summer blockbuster type games. PS+ has been providing plenty of indie title support in between the bigger games, so we have gotten content like Outlast in between Killzone and Imfamous. This strategy is obviously paying off looking at the sales of PS4, and from my own personal experience this has made it so I play my PS4 far more than I have my Wii U in the same span of time. I have so many games to play on my PS4 that I probably won’t get to them all, and I like having that option over clinging to every single release.

This is coming from perhaps one of the biggest Nintendo fanboys in the world, but they need to *** shape up or they’ll lose even their closest supporters. I’m excited for E3, and despite them not having a traditional stage show, I have high hopes we’ll get some good announcements out of them. Sorry for the rant, just wanted to provide my thoughts and perspective from someone who has traditionally supported Nintendo’s decisions.
