Counter Point: Nintendo Should Not Make A Legend Of Zelda Cartoon

A royal rebuttal.

If there is one thing Nintendo is good at according to fans, it is ruining beloved characters, turning historic franchises into unoriginal cash grabs, and generally finding ways to ruin your childhood. The troubles of the Wii U is a mere extension of the modern Nintendo, these critics say, a Nintendo more concerned with Mii, Mii, Mii, not us, not the fans, not the ones who know the best date spots in the Mushroom Kingdom and where to get the best deep fried Chozo or a heaping plate of Cucco and waffles.

Ruining characters.....

Historic franchises.....

...And your childhood. Wait, no, this pic actually made my day. Right click, save.....

Do we trust the modern Nintendo with expounding upon the adventures and characters of Zelda, Link, and the world of Hyrule?

Do

we

really:

Have we learned nothing???

Bill Wattson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, refused to allow his characters to be used for merchandising and even refused a Saturday morning cartoon to be made. His reasoning that doing so would cheapen the characters, that his idea of who the characters were would become subject to the demands of marketers, advertisers, and broadcasters. In this way could we see Zelda dress to appeal to the 14-18 year old male demographic? Would Link be redesigned to be a gruff, brooding, middle-aged guy with a stubbly beard? Would Ganon be voiced by Gilbert Gottfried?

The great thing about the Legend of Zelda series is that it allows the player to be the hero. Link himself was meant to the be ultimate player-avatar, a surrogate for the memories of Miyamoto and for childhood itself. As gamers, we all bring a unique history to the characters and story of the Legend of Zelda series, and maybe creating a "definitive" version of those characters, stories, and world is contrary to the very spirit, the very essence of the series itself. A Legend of Zelda cartoon has the possibility of not Linking players together, but dividing them.

But wait! In the interest of intellectual fairness, a Counter Counter-Point!

So yeah, maybe a cartoon based on Nintendo characters wouldn't be so bad after all.

I don't know if a Point / Counter Point blog series has been done before, but it's something which I think the community might have fun with: these could be serious, scholarly rebuttals, or something a bit sillier. A once a week Point / Counter Point might be a way to improve community engagement, improve communication between bloggers, and just be fun.

Let me know in the comments below just how right I am, or if you have a counter Counter-Point let me know on Twitter @CodeNameCrono.
