Why Can't We Be Friends?

I have begun to notice a trend in today's gaming community that is really starting to drive me up a wall. Folks seem to have gotten things a little twisted lately as to what a game truly is, and further more what makes one a "gamer".

With the recent explosion of games like Candy Crush and Flappy Bird(maybe you've heard of them) it seems all of the "elitists" have come out of the woodwork with their two cents on the subject. I've read things like "oh you're a gamer huh? Tell me about all of the games you have on your IPhone", or "Flappy Bird is just a lame excuse for a time waster and isn't even a game".

Well, I am here to say that that is a total load of crap. To even imagine that people think this way just makes me feel embarrassed to be a so called gamer.

Being a gamer is not about the games you play, or how often you play them, it is but a simple life style choice. If we were to judge gaming this way then Call Of Duty would be the only "real" game in existence, and I am pretty positive I am not the only one who disagrees on that front.

This argument that I see popping up all over the place is so full of holes that it should be a type of cheese.

First of all, who is anyone to classify what a game actually is? I have been playing games for the vast majority of my life and I don't even feel comfortable saying what is what. To me a game can be anything as long as it does it's job.

Is it fun? Does it keep you occupied? Are others enjoying it with you? is it popular? These tend to be questions that are involved with mainstream games. Granted mainstream games are mainstream because they ARE popular, but these same principles can be applied to those underrated gems and all games for that matter.

If a game isn't as popular as the next or vice versa doesn't make it any less of a game, and therefor those who play them any less of a gamer. A game is a game as long as someone can find a passion in it and enjoy playing it.

So that being said, I consider titles like Candy Crush Saga to be more then worthy of the title of Video Game, even if I don't enjoy them myself. Just because I don't like them doesn't mean I have the right to discriminate against them or the people who play them. We are all in this boat together and we all have different tastes.

So my question is, why can't we just be friends? We share the most common factor, and that being that we all found a passion in something we like to play. That's what being a gamer is all about.

As always thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed.
